how can i use plot functions? they are all unvariable.

Could you be more specific ? What is your problem exactly ?

Give a value to a variable of your choice and then select the same variable in the workspace (double-click) to see it in "Variables" (step3). Click on the plot menu and plot it.

Your step 3 should not be necessary. I believe selecting one or more variables in the Workspace component should be enough to enable the appropriate plot types in the Plots tab of the Toolstrip.

To amplify: you cannot select the plot types unless you have a variable selected.

When I try in R2017b, if I click in "workspace" on the name of a variable that is a scalar, then none of the plot types are selectable, but if I click on the name of a variable that is a non-scalar numeric value, then all of the plot types are selectable.
