What setting do I change so that all files opened in the editor are accessed by a single tabbed matlab editor window?

Presently, each file that I open for editing is assigned to its own window. I would like to have all open files be associated with a single, tabbed window. I am unable to find a setting that affects this. R12b.

I'm using R2015a. The "downward triangle in a circle" button is located to the left of the "Minimize/Restore toolstrips" button at the upper right corner of the Editor. Click the triangle button of the second Editor and select Dock All in Editor.

For anyone like me who couldn't find the Dock All option. The windows keyboard shortcut is ctrl+shift+d. This will dock any window that you have selected.

As far as I know, there is no setting that allows this view option to be explicitly specified.

However, MATLAB remembers your "last-used" preference, so in order to set the editor to always dock files in the tabbed format to which you refer, simply do the following:

1. Click the "dock" arrow in the upper hand corner of a single file. This will cause the file to be docked in the main MATLAB window.

2. Click the uppermost "undock" arrow in the editor tab (which is now in the main MATLAB window) to move the editor to its own window.

3. Open any other file. It will now be docked in the (now separate) editor window in the tabbed format you're wanting.

If you close the editor after doing this, your preference will be remembered the next time you open the editor.

This is still true to this day as I'm using R2016b. There is no way to explicitly request new files to be in new tabs rather than new windows unless you do this procedure. Thanks for posting your answer!

I am using R2019b and unfortunately this no longer works. No matter what I do every script opens in a new editor window. It is beyond frustrating. I vote to "unaccept" this answer. Not to mention, the fact that this isn't a user-settable preference is bizarre.

Click the downward-pointing triangle in the circle next to the X that closes the window on one of the undocked documents. Select "Dock All in Editor". All the documents that were undocked will now be docked in the Editor window. I just confirmed that this works in release R2019b.

You can dock or undock the Editor, dock or undock individual documents, or you can dock all undocked documents.

I confirm that Steven Lord's solution works. However, I'll add that the location of the "downward-pointing triangle" may be dependent on what OS you are using. On my Mac (BigSur v11.0), the triangle is not next to the 'X' for closing the windows (that 'X' is in the upper left window corner). Rather the triangle in my case is in the upper right editor window:
