Why do I see the error "Unable to locate required installation files" when running the MathWorks installer?

3 594 views (last 30 days)
When I enter the File Installation Key or select my license and confirm my installation settings, I receive an error that MATLAB is unable to locate the required installation files, or I see that some of my products are missing.
How do I fix this issue?
In MATLAB R2014a and earlier, the error is "There are no products available to install from this location."

This error can be caused by any of the following issues:
  • You have not downloaded any or all of the correct installation files
  • The installation files are not in the correct location
  • You are not using the correct File Installation Key
Note: If you are running the MathWorks Installer to install MATLAB or other MathWorks products with an internet connection but receive an unable to connect error, please see the following link.
You have not downloaded any or all of the correct installation files
To perform an offline installation using the File Installation Key, you are required to obtain the installation files prior to installation.  The MathWorks Installers downloaded from our website, e.g. matlab_R2020b_win64.exe, are not the installations files; the installation files are obtained by downloading the ISO (License Administrators only) or by downloading the installation files via the MathWorks Installer on an online machine. For instructions on obtaining the installation files, please refer to the following article:
You are not using the correct File Installation Key
If you are installing MATLAB or other MathWorks products offline with the File Installation Key, and the products are missing, make sure you have the correct File Installation Key. For instructions on obtaining a new File Installation Key, see this related article:
If you have the correct files and installation codes and the installer still does not list the product(s), please contact Installation support. You can contact Customer Service and Installation Support via the MathWorks website here:

Hi,
What is the correct location for the "licence.lic" file?
According to the error message, it should be where the install bash script is. And in my case, I have put it there...
I'm working with Linux (Manjaro and Gnome)
Thanks for your help

This error can be caused by any of the following issues:
  • You have not downloaded all of the correct installation files.
There is one click button only to download (by me) installation file which should be unzip in installed path before running running install in linux. what other file and where to download from???
  • The installation files are not in the correct location.
what is the correct location?? I have put the files in the directory where i run install (linux). is this wrong??
  • Your license does not contain the product you are trying to install.
I received the FIK from the tool license administrator of my company so that i can use it to install matlab which i downloaded but it still says missing required files. what files are missing? back to the question 1.
  • You are not using the correct File Installation Key.
I received the FIK from my company matlab eda tool admin. how do i know it is incorrect FIK???

@Leong Chin Loh to install matlab offline you need more than the zip file, you need the .iso file: https://www.mathworks.com/downloads/web_downloads/download_iso
If you are not a license administrator, that link will give you an error, and you will need to contact your license administrator. The R2020b iso is 18 Gb.

I have been trying to install matlab for going on 2 weeks now. I did all this and it still doesn't work! Now it say there is an issue with the license associated with this machine, sends me to another of these q&a and I still can't get anything to work.

I too can not install a "recently purchased" Matlab&Simulink Suite. This is a fresh install on a workstation which has no previous version. I am not interested in a refund. My need to install and use this suite is not optional. It must work. I submitted a service request get some help.

The number of possible system configurations is immense. Mathworks describes all the most common problems, but they cannot list everything.
A service request is the right way to go for something like this.
I hit an interesting one the other day: one of the support packages was failing to install because my OS-X filesystem is set to case sensitive, which is something they had not anticipated.

I face the same problem when silently installing 2020a on debian. I follow the instructions and it just doesn't work! (Sep 02, 2020 09:42:19) Missing Installation Files: Unable to locate the required files. To use a File Installation Key, you must run the installer from a directory that contains the installation files. For information on how to get the files, see this MATLAB Answer. at com.mathworks.install_core_common.MATLABInstallerExceptionUtil.getApplicationException(MATLABInstallerExceptionUtil.java:16)

Hi Maria,
The error you are experiencing is usually caused by non-ASCII characters in your path/username. I have attached a link below that explains this error and how to resolve it in more detail.

On Windows, you may need to run the MATLAB Installer as Administrator (right-click on the Installer and choose 'Run as Administrator') to not get this error.

Can someone help me?
I am installing an update (R2017b, update 4) but it also pops up this fetal error.
My OS is Linux, I am not sure if I launch the update by a correct command. I cannot launch it by entering the command suggested by MATLAB, but replace ./ with "sudo sh". https://www.mathworks.com/content/dam/mathworks/mathworks-dot-com/support/updates/r2017b/r2017b-updates-install-instructions.pdf
It then asks me the directory Please specify MATLAB installation directory [/usr/local/MATLAB/R2017b]
However, my MATLAB is not installed in usr but another file. Even I place the install file (R2017b_Update_4_glnxa64.sh) in the same file with R2017b, and simply press enter for the directory, the fetal error comes out.
(I am not asked for any installation key or activation key. I am not sure if this should be asked when installing an update)
