I have been using (licensed) MATLAB with no problem on two different Macbook Pro's, and three different Mac OS X versions.

I do not know any software which runs without any issues. You can find a noticable number of bug reports concerning Matlab under OS-X, especially Java seems to be a source of problems.
Without knowing any details of your needs, we cannot decide, if a free numerical software package is sufficient for you. There is no free version of Matlab, but only a cheap one for students.

The Java issues these days mostly affect parallel programming.

There is a patch available that fixes the errors.
