Is it calculating? hard to understand as matlab could produce the simplified expression in seconds but Mupad is stuck here like...
p.s. How do I get Mupad to be less buggyish whats the best way to get steps for simplifying expressions?

I do not see the prompt marking at the left. I think you might be in a text entry area, rather than in a equation entry area.
You will need to use "Proof" not "proof" by the way.

No, not exactly.

Look carefully at the left hand margin. The upper copy of the command was created using Insert -> Text Paragraph, which permitted me to put in non-executable text. The lower copy of the command has the

bracket lines to the left hand side, and is an execution group.
Your code does not have the bracket lines to the left hand side, so I think you are in a text area rather than an execution group.
In any case where you have a doubt, you can use Insert -> Calculation or Insert -> Calculation Above to create an execution input area.

Is there a way to get rid of the ability to enter non excutable text?
No.
p.s. what does orange vs black text mean then?
I have just discovered that black text can be triggered by "Insert -> Frame". Frames appear to be non-executable text. Black text can also be triggered by "Insert -> Text Paragraph" or "Insert -> Text Paragraph Above"
If you copy orange text (from an execution group) and paste it into a text paragraph area then it will show up in orange, but if you type manually in the text paragraph then it will come out black.
