When is the right time to buy a Home license to access the latest release?

A Home license can be bought at any time to access the latest release of MATLAB since MathWorks Software Maintenance Service is included for 1 year after the initial purchase. This allows access to 2 yearly releases within 12 months of initial purchase. However, to access upgrades after the 1st year, a valid MathWorks Software Maintenance Service is required.

If my Software Maintenance Service has expired, do I need to purchase maintenance for MATLAB and add-ons to continue using them?

Software Maintenance enables users to download the latest version of MATLAB and add-ons. In order to use previously purchased add-ons on the latest version of MATLAB, all products need to be current on Maintenance.

To be more explicit, term is perpetual for the release you paid for, but there is a cost to keep current.
