I will be using imtool(imread(' ')) to display and collect information from a snapshot.
I need to have a standard amount of pixels shown after using imtoool() , regardless of the number of pixels in the snapshot. Say 500 by 500.

There is no support for forcing imtool to output 500 x 500 regardless of how the user manipulates the image within imtool. imtool includes a crop tool, for example, and if the user cropped down to (say) 7 pixels by 11, then there is no way without editing the Mathworks code to force imtool to internally resize to 500 x 500 anyhow.
What you should do is imresize() the output of imtool.
