Why is my editor slow?

I am using MATLAB R2011b on a Win 7 machine. When using the editor, command window, or even any figures that I create, the response is very slow, sometimes 5 to 10 seconds. It may or may not be relevant, but when some windows are slow to come up, they will pain the frame, wait a few seconds, then place the Java icon on the caption bar.
This makes editing tedious and error prone. Is anyone else experiencing this and / or where do I look for a solution?

How much memory do you have on your system?
How big are the files you are trying to edit?
Are you using 32 bit or 64 bit?

Sorry for the delay in getting back but I was traveling. The memory is 16G on a 64 bit system. The biggest file I use is 52k.

You can increase your Java heap space and observe if the error persists. Refer to - https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/matlab_external/java-heap-memory-preferences.html

I just increased it to 2080MB and no change.
