Where do I start? I would like to learn to build a binary databse

I just learnt that it is possible to speed up a data mining script by building a binary database. I would like to get more exposure on this skill and wonder where can I start on it? I am a very beginner on this concept with very limited programming skill... any advice/help will be greatly appreciated.

If you are doing data mining you should be considering mapreduce and hadoop

Thanks Walter! May be a very good option, but I don't believe my matlab 2011 supports this...
