José-Luis answered about R2016a. The answer for R2016b is not public information, as it is in preview testing covered by NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement), and what is in the preview release is subject to change for the final R2016b release. Unless you qualify for running the preview yourself, the only people who can answer this are Mathworks Sales.

Dear Walter, José-Luis,
thank you for your reply; I understand the information is only valid for the current prerelease, but on the basis of this understanding, can it be disclosed what is the support gcc version for the current prerelease of R2016b?
I could install and run the preview myself but I wanted to check the supported gcc version FIRST before going through that trouble.
Something odd by the way: I'm running Ubuntu 15.10 LTS with gcc 5.2.x and I considered reverting to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS - however this version seems to use gcc 4.8.x, while Matlab 2016a requires gcc 4.7.x !! I would strongly recommend that Matlab supports the gcc versions that comes as default version with LTS linux versions.

Might still work if you're lucky.
