I have just downloaded an updated fixed-license file. How do I activate it?

I recently started to get a message whenever starting MatLab, saying my license will expire in ## days (initially 60 days, decrementing each day). I have a "license.lic" file on my computer for my fixed license. My administrator told me we were still supported, and I should go to the website and download an updated license file. I did so, but now I cannot figure out how to get MatLab (both versions 2011A and 2015A) to use the new license file. Under "Help" - "Licensing" - "Activate Software", I can select my "license.lic" file, but then nothing changes and I still get the "Your MATLAB license will expire..." message on startup.
What am I missing here? How do I use my updated "license.lic" file?

MathWorks confirmed that my "Activate Software" procedure actually was working. The problems is that the new software license file I was downloading had the same expiration date as my old file. The solution is to talk to my company's license managers about extending the expiration date of my fixed license in MathWorks' system. Once that is done, I have been promised that I can download another file and activate it the same way, and this time it will solve the problem.
