Serial Number for Older Versions

Hi, I recently was given an older mac as a gift. I'm trying to activate an older version of MATLAB (r2012a) on the computer. I have already installed it but it continues to ask me for a serial number when I try to activate it. I purchased r2014a version and the serial number that I have is too long to fit in the box. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

You are trying to place your activation key, not the serial number.
Note: if you have available activations for your R2014a license, you can install and activate that. That would also authorize you to use R2012a, if you had some particular reason for running the older software.
If you are trying to run R2012a as an additional license without "using up" an activation for your R2014a license, then whether you can do that under the license terms will depend upon whether the R2102a version was a Commercial/ Professional license, an Academic license, or a Student license. Student licenses are not transferable (Home licenses are not either); the other licenses might be, depending on the type of license and the circumstances.

It's not peculiar to run an older version. There are many reasons why one might want to do so. I am currently facing this same issue.

@James: Of course there can be good reasons to run an old version. Do you have a question? What exactly is your issue? Note that this is the section for answers.

Hello, I am experiencing the same problem. Where can I find the shorter serial number? Thanks
