symbolic simplification to a function

from basic trigo formula
sec^2 x = 1+tan^2 x
in matlab
sym('x')
trigo = 1 + tan(x)^2
simplify(trigo) will give the same answer instead of sec^2 x. Why?

Try simple(trigo) as an experiment
