For example hypothetically your university expects instructors to notify them of which courses need matlab, and then IT pulls out the class registration list and grants access to those people... but hypothetically something might have gone wrong and you are not showing up as registered for the course.
There are a lot of other possibilities: the point is that we as outside volunteers are largely powerless to figure out the technical details of your license, so you need to contact your university

In the meantime perhaps you could do the work using MATLAB Online, which gives you about 20 free hours per month (but might perhaps not have the toolboxes you need)

Hi Marija,
I understand that you are facing licensing issue which is preventing the access to MATLAB. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:
  • Check License Status by logging into MathWorks Account on the MathWorks website and make sure it has not expired and that it is still active. Link to license centre- https://in.mathworks.com/login?uri=%2Flicensecenter%2F%3Fs_tid%3Dhp_ff_s_license
  • Ensure to log in with the correct MathWorks Account associated with the license. Sometimes users have multiple accounts, and the license might be associated with a different one.
  • If having a standalone license, one might need to update or reactivate the license file. This can be done from within MATLAB (if it opens) or by using the MathWorks License Center on their website.
  • Make sure that MATLAB is properly activated. Try reactivating it using the activation client which is typically found in the MATLAB installation directory (e.g., C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2023b\bin\win64\activate_matlab.exe for a 64-bit Windows installation of MATLAB R2023b).
  • If using a network license (common in university settings), there could be an issue with the network license manager or server. Check with university's IT department or whoever manages the MATLAB licenses to ensure the server is up and running.
  • If using a network license or a license that requires verification over the internet, ensure that firewall or VPN settings are not blocking MATLAB's access to the license server.
  • Some universities have a license portal from where one can obtain activation keys or download license files. Make sure to follow the correct procedure as outlined by the university.
  • If the license is provided by university, reach out to the university's IT support or the department that manages software licenses. They can provide specific guidance and help resolve license issues.
If the matter is urgent and need to use MATLAB immediately, consider using MATLAB Online as a temporary solution, if the license provides access to it. Please contact MathWorks Support if the issue persists after trying the above-mentioned steps.
Hope it helps!
Best Regards,
Simar
