Why can't I start the installer for MATLAB R2011a or newer on a Mac running OS X 10.5 (Leopard)?

I am trying to start the installer for R2011a on my Mac computer running 10.5, but the installer disappears without an error message.

As of R2011a, Leopard is no longer a supported operating system for MATLAB. To use MATLAB, you will need to update your OS to Snow Leopard (10.6.4 or higher) or use a supported version of MATLAB on your computer:
