License manager error -7

Usually no problems launching MATLAB 2012b from my lab at university, but I've been trying to launch it on the plane today (internet access via Boingo) and no luck. I've been getting "Licence Manager Error -7: No socket connection to license server manager". Any help would be greatly appreciated: I paid $25 for wifi access and urgently need to get some simulations done.

Update: I turned off my firewall and got, just once, "License manager error -16: Make sure vendor daemon path in the license file is correct". However, on all subsequent attempts I've received the original "error -7" message.
