A simpler example,
>> A=reshape(1:12,2,3,2)
A(:,:,1) =
1 3 5
2 4 6
A(:,:,2) =
7 9 11
8 10 12
>> A(1,:,2)
ans =
7 9 11

It's a 4D array, and you're specifying the first index to be i, and the last index to be d. So you're extracting a 2D plane from that array.
