Use lcdfilter for subpixel anti-aliased text in Linux

When running Matlab under Linux it respects the system font smoothing, so if RGB subpixel antialiasing is turned on it uses it. However it ignores whatever value is put in the fontconfig for the lcdfilter, so there are harsh color fringes as text is color antialiased but completely unfiltered.
How can I get Matlab to respect the lcdfilter setting.
