If it wasn't clear my question is how to make the y-axis disapper and how to plot that point (which is a number between 'a' and 'b')

I am trying to create a plot where I have only the x-axis. With
xlim ([a b])
I can specifiy the length of the axis. I now want to plot a number in only that axis. How could I do this?

You should turn off the visibility of the vertical axis. For example:
scatter (1,1);
ax = gca;
ax.YAxis.Visible = 'off';
xlim ([0,3]);
