blank screen on startup

When starting R2020a from my CentOS 8 machine, I get nothing but a blank screen. I see the splash screen, but a window then pops up (presumably the gui) and it's only white. When maximizing it looks like there's something there, but it looks transparent. It's using opengl to render. it is a gnome-desktop. I have seen hints that disabling some fancy desktop animations (via unity?) help, but I can't find out how to do that on CentOS 8 (might only be ubuntu?). I tried setting the AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit ENV variable, no change.
I can get the GUI to render via ssh, which means it's the desktop that is getting in the way somehow. Any other thoughts?

The solution was to call tech support. Did you do that? If not, why not?
