When matrix is close to singular or badly scaled

When a matrix is close to singular, and a function attempts to compute the inverse of it, does matlab apply some approximation over it such that the inverse of the matrix is a valid number? If so, does the approximated value vary from matlab version to version or system to system?

My best guess is that when a matrix is close to being singular, tiny numerical errors will have an increased impact on the result. I would tend to say that you will have some behavior amongst 32 bits systems and an other behavior on the 64 bits systems.
