Issuing a call to a function

I'm trying to call up a function as another file, FileA, into FileB but I'm not sure what to do exactly. I tried to put my_function(FileA), my_function('FileA), my_function('FileA.m') but I just get the message "Undefined function or variable 'my_function'.". I have FileA pulled up in the left side bar with the current folder files but I'm not sure what else I need to do to fix it.
