I run mac os x mountain lion. If i purchase the 2011a version now, will i be able to transition to the better compatible version of matlab for free? 2012b is not yet available but it is the product i will need for my work at school.

These types of questions are best asked directly to TMW as they are the only people who can give you an official answer.

Do you perhaps mean if you get R2012a now?
I bought R2012a (on OS-X) about a month ago. The full commercial version included a year of software maintenance service, and thus will cover R2012b when it comes out.
Note: if you buy R2012a Student Version, then there is unlikely to be an R2012b Student Version (there is only usually one Student Version per year.)
If you are purchasing Academic Version, then I do not know if that includes maintenance.
