How to calculate standard precipitation index (SPI)

There seem to be various websites that define the SPI, e.g. https://www.niwa.co.nz/climate/nz-drought-monitor/droughtindicatormaps/Standardised%20Precipitation%20Index%20%28SPI%29
but at the very least, you need a time series of data of your region of interest in order to compute the expected precipitation. .
