Matlab remains open in background after being closed.

I'm using R2018b in Windows server. According to Windows Task Manager, after closing Matlab, the Matlab process remains running and consuming RAM. Additionally, if I open a file using fopen, closing Matlab does allow me to delete the file as somehow it is still "in use". I can "End Process" with task manager each time I close Matlab, but that should not be necessary.
Is this a known problem and is there a solution for this?

Same problem here. I regularly have to go kill the process. Also, I am never one to have multiple matlab instances open, so I know this isn't the issue.

One of the Mathworks Staff has adressed this issue here.
Maybe this will help solving your issue even though that post was for 2014 version.
