I have been using Matlab 2018. All of the sudden it would not start. The splash icon doesn't show up and when I open task manager it shows no memory or cpu load for Matlab.

I have the exact same question. The last thing I was doing on MATLAB R2018b was editing a script to train a deep learning model last Thursday. Haven't been able to get it to work since then.
I have MATLAB installed on my PC and only some files stored on cloud locations. I imagine the problem has something to do with the fact that some of the files are on OneDrive. I made sure to sync everything I had stored on OneDrive with my local PC directories so I would assume these wouldn't have an impact on whether MATLAB works or not.
I have since copied these files to an online MATLAB Drive and am hoping I'll be able to restart MATLAB to resolve any path-related issues from within the software.
I tried re-installing the main MATLAB package hoping this would get it to work again, but no dice.

"I have the exact same question." <== then the answers will be exactly the same. Did you call the Mathworks for fast and free help yet? If not, why not? Really, it's your fastest way to a solution. Trust me.

Had this issue when I updated to Malab 2020b patch 5. I tried reinstalling matlab, tried the 2021a pre, and so on. The Printer Spool service trick worked for me.
Thanks a lot!

As usual the readers have less chances than you to find out, what "suddenly" exactly means. Of course something has happend in between, so you have to find out what. Perhaps restore the former status from your backup.
I guess you have moved some files from the Matlab path to a OneDrive or DropBox folder. Then try to restore the former path. In other concerning threads Matlab does start after half an hout, as far as I remember.
