Is it possible to communicate via CAN without the Vehicle Network Toolbox?

I'm trying communicate with a Kvaser Leaf Light 2, but I don't have and cannot get the Vehicle Network Toolbox. I'd prefer to use strictly MATLAB and not Simulink.
