Why does MATLAB encounter a Java exception when there are square brackets ('[' or ']') in the MATLAB installation path?

I am receiving a "java.net.MalformedURLException" in MATLAB or Simulink. My MATLAB installation path contains square brackets.

Installation paths containing square brackets or other special characters are currently not supported by MATLAB and may result in these errors. Consider reinstalling MATLAB on a path without special characters.
