Why do I get 'MATLAB quit unexpectedly' when starting R2018a in High Sierra?

When trying to start MATLAB R2018a, it crashes with an Apple error stating that 'Matlab Quit Unexpectedly'.
When attempting to start MATLAB using the -nodesktop flag it closes with error 'abort trap 6'.

This issue is currently being investigated by MathWorks; the current workaround is to start MATLAB using the '-nosplash' flag.
Open a Terminal window (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and run the following command:
$MATLAB/bin/matlab -nosplash
Where $MATLAB is the path to your MATLAB directory. For example, if you are using MATLAB R2016b and have installed MATLAB in the default directory, the command will be:
/Applications/MATLAB_R2016b.app/bin/matlab -nosplash
