Why do I get the message "File not found. Check the file name and try again" saving a file in Windows 10?

When creating new .m files, whenever I attempt to save the file, after choosing the filename I get a pop-up message "File not found. Check the file name and try again".
Something similar happens when modifying existing .m files, for which I get a pop-up message "Error writing <filename>. Access is denied".
It does not seem to matter where I try to save the file. I have administrator privileges to the folder I am trying to save to and I have tried running MATLAB as an administrator and it still does not work.

This error sometimes occurs in Windows 10 if "Controlled Folder Access" is enabled in Windows Defender. You can turn off Controlled Folder Access in Windows Defender Security Center or add MATLAB to the allow list. See this page for steps on how to do this:
