I have several medical images where I want to detect certain patterns and later use those patterns for identification in future images.

Any suggestions on what method to use with Matlab??

normxcorr2_demo.m

Perhaps normalized cross correlation (demo attached). Otherwise, just check the literature. http://www.visionbib.com/bibliography/contents.html especially sections 14 and 20.
