Load VST instrument and play MIDI events

Hello! I was wondering if there is a way to generate an audio sequence with MIDI events as input, through a loaded VST (with loadAudioPlugin). The tutorials and some quick searching shows only to work with audio plugins (VST plugins not VSTi). I can load VST instruments but I cannot find any parameters to set MIDI events. There are always loaded as 'source' plugins with 0 inputs.

Has anyone tried that?! Or it is impossible at all?

I think I have a similar problem. I have a Matlab program that sends MIDI code to an external device, but I would like to send the code to a VST instrument simulation program. I can use my program with a non-VST software synthesizer, so that when I enter the mididevinfo command, Matlab automatically recognizes that synthesizer. It doesn't recognize the VST instrument simulation program.
