I followed the instructions for setting up Simscape Multibody Link for Autodesk Inventor and I when I open inventor I see the Simscape Multibody Link tools on the menu. However, I tested it by using the inventor sample CAD file that came with Simscape Multibody Link and it opens a MATLAB window that is blank for a few minutes and then it times out showing a message saying unable to open MATLAB in Inventor.

Can you confirm you have enabled the plugin using the smlink_linkinv function? Similar to the documentation here.

As mentioned above in the comments, it appears you have not linked Inventor to MATLAB.
See documentation: https://www.mathworks.com/help/smlink/cad-link.html
