4 views (last 30 days)
  1. If I buy a home license is it possible to move it to another PC, in the case where/when I replace my old PC with a new one?
  2. How much does it cost to update my software to a new version (home edition + const of toolboxes)?
  3. Is it possible to write my thesis with home edition?
  4. Is it possible to upgrade my license from home to standard license or I must buy a new license?

"If I buy a home license is it possible to move it to another PC"
Yes, up to 4 times per year
"How much does it cost to update my software to a new version"
It is not clear what you would be updating from? There is no license that you can upgrade from to create a Home license. If you are talking about the cost of Software Maintenance Service, the yearly price to keep up-to-date with new releases, then I do not know the price for the Home License at the moment; you should estimate at between 1/5 and 1/3 of the purchase cost, per year.
"Is it possible to write my thesis with home edition"
Yes. What is not permitted with the Home License is earning money from use of the software. Which is also not permitted with the Student license.
If you are eligible for a Student license, then that is less expensive and supports more toolboxes (some of the toolboxes available for Student license are not available for Home license.)
The Student license may be used for course work and to complete degree requirements (so, thesis for example.) A strict reading of the Student license limitations would not allow the Student license to be used to learn MATLAB "because it is fun" or "because it will probably be useful in my career"; those would be permitted with the Home license.
Neither the Student license nor the Home license could be used to, for example, TA as a paid position.
"Is it possible to upgrade my license from home to standard license"
There is no publicized route for that. I do not know if Mathworks has provision for that; you would have to ask them.

I am a researcher who bought a home licence of matlab. I now want to upgrade to standard licence so I can use matlab for research purpose predominantly, legally

You would need to contact Mathworks Sales to see if they have an upgrade path from Home license to Standard license. I have never heard of it being possible, but I have not talked to the sales people in a number of years.

Call the friendly folks at the Mathworks and ask your licensing questions. We are not Mathworks employees and cannot authoritatively answer licensing questions. A 2 minute phone call and you'll have your answers.
The answer to 1 is definitely Yes.
