Tutorial on controlling steppers using a GUI to serial via USB?

I have been using MATLAB for the past few years, but never with motors. I am tasked with the job of creating a GUI to control a couple stepper motors independently varying speed and direction upon user inputs. I have become somewhat familiar with basic GUIs but can not find a solid lead on controlling a stepper using a GUI. Does anyone know of any tutorials that may help me or have any advice they would like to share? My senior project is heavily dependent on this so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
