OK - I figured it out. Turned out when I reinstalled Matlab, I copied my previous pathdef.m file into the MATLAT/toolbox/local directory, so it was missing some stuff I would have had on the fresh install. Restoring path defaults ('restoredefaultpath') then saving it fixed it up! Yay!!
problem using gui in figures to open or save

Anyone had a problem using the gui within figures to save or open figures? Using Linux R2016a get the error:
Undefined variable "matlab" or class "matlab.internal.webwindowmanager.instance.findAllWebwindows".
Error in matlab.ui.internal.dialog.DialogUtils.disableAllWindowsSafely
Error in uigetputfile_helper (line 45) c = matlab.ui.internal.dialog.DialogUtils.disableAllWindowsSafely();
I can still use command line 'savefigure' but it's nuisance not to be able to use the gui.
