I need to scan a text with variable number of coloumns

Hello, I need to scan a text with a variable number of cloumns. I have a counter, nTarget and I know that the coloumns are 3xnTarget so I would like to write something like dati = textscan(fid,'%7f'); repeating %7f for 3xnTarget times (there are other data then to collect. Many thanks
