How to debug with Matlabcontrol?

I'm using Matlabcontrol to execute Matlab scripts from Java. This works fine but there is a problem with debugging. When I execute a script (with a function in it) and there is a failure, I cannot debug it. I don't see the variables in the Matlab workspace because it is a function. I have tried to set the variables global but I still don't see them. Breakpoints also do not work together with Matlabcontrol.

Is there an easy way to debug?
