Can I know about removing background and feature extraction?

Now,I am trying to write about flower recognition paper.In this paper,I have a dataset with many flower species.I will compare the input image with the flower in dataset.I need to remove the background of input image.I want to know the best method for beginner of MATLAB for removing background.Is it possible thresholding method is the best?And then I want to compare color of petal,shape and color of center(stamen) to get accurate result.For this case,can I use HSV color model.How can use?Please help me, sir. Thanks for your attention and guideline. :)
