How to Update a Figure Window to a Different Figure Without Closing and Opening the Window

I am trying to make a GUI that has two fig files. Right now, I have programmed the two figs to each have one button. The button on fig1 closes fig1 and opens fig2, and the button on fig2 close fig2 and opens fig1. The problem is, I don't want the fig windows to close and open. What I am trying to do is have the fig window update to another fig without closing, so it looks more like a typical application would? Is there a way to do this?
