Matlab 2018a only supports Ubuntu up to 17.10.

The support Chris mentioned is only the tested range. Outside of that it may or may not work. I have been able to get older releases that this to work on 20.04.

But why are you running this command? Shouldn't you create such a folder first? Why aren't you running the install script?

I don't know if WSL is actually supported, so you might be on your own here, but the messages reads to me as if the installation was performed with the installer_input.txt. It reads like the installation was finished. I don't have experience with silent installs on Linux, so I don't know if this is unexpected behavior.

Have you tried explicitly installing with the txt file? (you do need to modify it, the instructions are in the file itself)

Also, how exactly did you check if Matlab was installed? Simply running the matlab command might not be enough, as that isn't automatically registered.

Though I don't understand why you're trying so hard to run an outdated version of Matlab in an Ubuntu VM...

R2018a is just old, not necessarily outdated. Also, given the format of the command line, I'm assuming this is not a VM, but instead windows subsystem for Linux (which would also make the mention of Windows make much more sense).

The link you posted only applies (in my experience) to R2021b and R2022a.

Tone is of course very difficult to convey on the internet (as you can't assume a cultural and linguistic background), but your comments in this thread seem a bit harsh. Do with that what you want.

Why not install Ubuntu on a new SSD (preferable) or VM? WSL is only another obstacle / complication: it introduces uncertainty that can be eliminated with an SSD ./ VM.
