For my understanding these are GRIB2 files... any potential reasons they're not working? Maybe I misunderstand that NCREAD cannot read this format? Any help would be appreciated

data = ncread(url,'APCP');

As of R2023b, you can read data from a GRIB file (.grb, .grib, .grib2) using the Mapping Toolbox readgeoraster function. You can also get information about a GRIB file by using the georasterinfo function. These functions were enhanced in R2024b to support GRIB files that use CCSDS compression.

I don't believe ncread can read files via FTP, only OPeNDAP. You'll have to save the file locally before you can read it.

Also, you'll need to convert the file to netcdf... unlike NCL, Matlab doesn't read in GRIB files natively.
