I am fairly new into Embedded Technology and have self-learned Linux Drivers and ATMEGA micro-controller programming and development.
I wish to learn MATLAB too - but not sure where to begin from? What are the real time projects we can build using MATLAB?
Moreover is MATLAB a branch within Embedded Systems? What type of Industries requires MATLAB project and what benefits it bring in conjunction with Micro-Controllers / Linux?

If you are a student, I recommend just buying the student version for a reasonable price. This comes with a nice variety of toolboxes. Last I heard, you can add toolboxes to this for $20.
From the main Mathworks page, select Products and you will see a link to Embedded systems. You can see from there that Matlab offers you very powerful tools in this area.
From Simulink to the compilers that help deploy code, you can do almost anything you desire.
If your not a student, take a look at the products page and request a trial. The documentation, although not as great as it used to be, is still a good place to start.
Good luck
