What is a wrapper?

I've constructed a GUI using GUIDE and I am trying to understand the initialisation code.
After doing a bit of delving I think that I have discovered that:
function varargout = mygui(varargin)
is a wrapper, but I am unclear as to what a wrapper is.
It must have something to do with inputs and outputs.
As always, any help will be gratefully received
Steve

This is a reasonable definition:
How do you know it is a wrapper if you do not know the definition of a wrapper?

I was reading about varargin and varargout and came across this web page:
It was more confusing than helpful, but it did at least lead me to the term 'wrapper'.
I will look at your link now.
Cheers
