Heila Connects Distributed Clean Energy Sources

    Francisco Morocz, Heila Technologies

As part of the MathWorks Startup Program, Heila has access to MATLAB at a startup-friendly price and engineering support from MathWorks experts, which enables them to research projects, develop prototypes, and bring their products to production.

The Heila Platform, built using MATLAB®, creates a decentralized system that makes it possible to grow stable, renewable energy-based microgrids from the ground up, enabling innovation and community action. The complex system connects solar panels, wind turbines, and other assets located at the edge of the grid.

At Heila Technologies, we are trying to revolutionize a very complex system, The Grid. And we're doing it by developing a set of sophisticated technologies that will enable a transformation from centralized and dirty power to decentralized and clean, by installing solar panels, wind turbines, different assets at the edge of the grid. The problem with those assets is that they are intermittent. And the way to kind of normalize that and make those assets really work for a stable grid and provide power to people in a stable way, is you can aggregate them.

And that's what a microgrid is. It's an aggregation of different assets. That's what our technology enables the systems to do, is control all of these little assets that behave differently. We gather and we work with a lot of data. So making sense of the data is something that we need to do and we do all the time.

MATLAB is an enabling technology from the point of view, that it allows us to do the mathematical work and the statistical and probabilistic work that we need to do to actually make decisions on how we implement better algorithms. For us, it's the right tool. And it's the one that we have always used.
