Finds ridges in a 2D image

find ridges in a 2D image by using local Hessian matrices to find directions of salient lines (via eigen decomposition of the hessian). The eigenvectors describe directions of the double-derivative locally around a pixel that are invariant to transformation (i.e. stable ridges or valleys).
