A semiconverter, also known as a half-controlled converter, is a type of power electronic device commonly used in DC motor drives.
A semiconverter, also known as a half-controlled converter, is a type of power electronic device commonly used in DC motor drives and power supply applications. It is a bridge configuration of rectifiers that combines controlled devices (such as thyristors) with uncontrolled devices (like diodes). This design allows for partial control of the output voltage, enabling a balance between performance and cost.
Half-Controlled Operation:
- Thyristors provide control over the firing angle and, hence, regulate the output voltage.
- Diodes ensure conduction in specific parts of the AC input cycle.
A single-phase semiconverter consists of:
- Two Thyristors (SCRs): Provide control over the output voltage.
- Two Diodes: Conduct naturally during their respective half-cycles of the AC waveform.
