Installation issues on Windows 8 64 bit [R2012a]: silent failure of installer

1 view (last 30 days)
Hiya,
For my sins I'm using Windows 8 (64 bit). I'm having trouble getting MATLAB installed:
I have downloaded the Matlab 2012a release from my university's website, mounted it using CyberLink Virtual Drive, and tried to run it. It says "Configuring Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" for a minute or so before vanishing. A "Windows Installer" process persists in Task Manager, but the installer does not seem to progress. There's no obvious error messages.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be going wrong?
Thanks, Joshua

  1. Reboot to make sure that anything half-done will be stopped.
  2. Try launching the installer from an elevated command prompt (right click on cmd, then "Run as Administrator", then start the installation process. See if it proceeds.
  3. If the above doesn't work, installation support is available free of charge. They might be able to help.
