Individual licenses do not expire for Home licenses or most Student licenses or Education licenses or Standard (commercial / professional) licenses.

MOOC licenses expire.

Historically, Mathworks offered 8 month or 1 year licenses to students through campus bookstores. I have not heard of those for several years, but I have not been told that they no longer exist. Student licences purchased through the online stores do not expire.

Businesses and universities have the option of purchasing permanent licenses, or licences for a term.

Term licences are required in some places for accounting purposes, so that the cost of the services can be allocated to the year the service was used. And there are some places (especially governments) that are forbidden from "purchasing" software licenses for a mix of reasons (including, in some states, because a business that offered term licenses lobbied the state for a legal change, simply to take business away from a competitor that only offered purchases. State government can be extremely petty at times.)

Total Academic Headcount and total faculty licenses are usually term licenses: Mathworks and the institution arrange for mass service for a period rather than purchasing an infinite number of licenses.

So, you are probably in one of a small number of situations:

1. Your institution uses network licenses and decided not to pay to renew MATLAB. This would not be good news for you
2. Your institution uses network licenses and has arranged payment with Mathworks but has not switched over the license file yet, and when they do you will not have to do anything
3. or you are a student using an educational license provided by your institution, and Mathworks wants to know that you are still using the license. In this situation go to the upper-right entry on the command window toolstrip and use that menu to Update License and that should do the trick. Help -> Licensing -> Update Current Licenses
