Custom functions to scale y axis to?

I have used the 'log' scale frequently, however other options would be quite convenient for me, such as root scales, maybe even polynomial scales. One example that immediately comes up is wishing to plot beta absorption/ energy curves on specific empirical scales, while retaining the units and tick marks. I suppose I could figure some hacky way to get around it, but I wonder if there is a toolset made for this problem. If matlab can fit models of custom design, and can also fit logarithmic axis which do not produce negative values, I see no reason why there wouldn't be the option of more than lin and log scales for the axes.

"I see no reason why there wouldn't be the option of more than lin and log scales for the axes."
Nobody raised the enhancement request to the level of sufficient justification that it has reached development.
I don't recall having seen one (but then again, I don't go searching all that regularly, either), but File Exchange would be the place to start...there's link in dropdown at the MATLAB Central tab above...
